A series of7S patients with established chondromalacia patellae is presented. All had a lateral release procedure carried out after failure of conservative treatment. The results are discussed in relation to the findings at operation. In the early stages of chondromalacia, release of the lateral retmaculum was successful in relieving the symptoms for a year or more; review at three years showed a significant number
